Solar System Path In Sudbury With Science North
When you were in school, did you learn about the fascinating aspects of the solar system? While you may have taken a few courses or have completed your own research through Google, one thing to note is that the solar system is huge! In fact, although you might already know that the solar system is ginormous, you might struggle with understanding how vast it is. Luckily for us, Science North has put together a solar system path to show how big it really is.
How Was The Solar System Path Introduced
The solar system path was introduced by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada in Sudbury. They discussed how people have difficulty visualizing how large the solar system actually is, therefore, they decided to take matters into their own hands and create a hands-on exhibit where people can truly see the scale of the planets and the Sun (CBC News, 2022). What Is The Solar System Path And Where Is It Located
The solar system path is an outdoor exhibit that spans across the Jim Gordon Boardwalk in Bell Park. To experience this exhibit, you travel along the shore of Ramsey Lake to explore the Sun and eight planets. Along the path, there are different stop sites where you can read more about the different systems. Each stop includes a QR code where individuals will be taken to the Science North website to learn more about the solar system.
Indigenous Guidance
The City of Greater Sudbury is on the ancestral land of the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek and Wahnapitae First Nations. According to Science North (2022), “For the Anishinaabek, life begins in Waabanong (the East), where the Sun rises, then moves along our life path to Ningawbewnong (the West), where it sets. The symbol of the Sun is also represented by the Ishkode (Sacred Fire) in Anishinaabek ceremonies.” Not only did Science North use Indigenous knowledge to create the path, but they also used direct translations in the Anishinaabemowin language on the signs along the path.
